Open Road Car

The Open Road programme is funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).

The programme currently operates in 9 locations around New Zealand.

The Open Road Driver Training Programme helps enables practical driver education to former refugees to sit their Restricted and Full License.

Having a driver's licence contributes to successful settlement in many ways such as:

  • Increased independence and confidence

  • Transporting children to and from school

  • Securing employment

  • Social engagement and connection

Over the past 4 years we have supported more than 1000 former refugees to sit and pass their test.

  • The programme runs for 12-20 weeks ( depending on learner progress ).

  • We have 2 intakes of learners per year ( with 20 places in each ) but have a need for volunteer mentors all year round.

  • A dual-control vehicle is supplied for the practice sessions.

  • All driving mentors are given training and induction for the duration of the programme, and will be required to attend a 90 minute induction at the beginning of the programme.

  • Practice session times will be according to availability of the mentor & learner.
